Alanya has one of the mildest climates in Turkey: long, hot, dry summers and short, wet winters. The canyon is open in every season, but the experience changes — in the volume of the waterfall, the temperature of the air and above all the number of people on the boardwalk.
The short answer
May, June, September and early October are the sweet spot: warm enough to swim on the coast, water still flowing well in the gorge, and fewer coaches than in July and August. In midsummer the canyon is busiest — precisely because it is the coolest place within reach of the beach.
Season by season
| Season | Alanya weather | In the canyon | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
| March–April | Mild, around 19–23 °C, some showers | Waterfall at full strength; cold and fresh | Light |
| May–June | Warm to hot, around 26–31 °C, dry | Good flow, green pools, comfortable walking | Moderate |
| July–August | Hot and humid, 33 °C and more | A cool refuge; less water in the fall | Heavy at midday |
| September–October | Hot easing to warm, 27–31 °C; sea still warm | Low, clear water; soft light | Moderate, then light |
| November–February | Cool, 15–20 °C, the rainy season | Powerful water after rain; closures possible | Very light |
Summer heat: read this
In July and August daytime temperatures on the coast regularly pass 33 °C with high humidity. The canyon is markedly cooler, but the journey is not: open jeeps and restaurant terraces are in full sun. Drink plenty, wear a hat and choose a tour with an early start. If you are driving yourself, be at the gate when it opens.
The best time of day
Tour coaches arrive between about 11:00 and 14:00. Before 10:30 you may share the boardwalk with a handful of people; after 15:00 the crowds thin again and the light softens. Direct sun reaches the bottom of the gorge for only a few hours around midday, so photographers who want glowing water aim for late morning, and those who want empty walkways come early.
Winter visits
From November to March many tours pause or run only on certain days, some valley restaurants close, and heavy rain can shut the canyon temporarily. On a clear winter day, though, you may have a thundering waterfall to yourself. A hire car is the practical way to go.
Holidays and weekends
Turkish families head for the Sapadere and Dim valleys on summer Sundays and during the religious holidays (Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı, whose dates move each year). Midweek is quieter.
